Our journey: empowering Africa's blue economy leaders

FishLead Hub is a not-for-profit, youth-led and youth-focused initiative established to raise and empower young leaders in Africa's blue economy. We noticed a significant issue: many students studying fisheries, aquaculture, and blue economy-related disciplines in African tertiary institutions lacked prior interest in these fields. They often ended up there after failing to gain admission to their originally desired discipline, leading to struggles with motivation, direction, and purpose. A high percentage of graduates then diverted to other career paths, leaving a huge human capital gap in these vital sectors. These challenges stemmed from a lack of early awareness, early mentorship, and exposure to real-life experiences.

At FishLead Hub, we are bridging this gap through a targeted pipeline of support. 

• Early Awareness: We engage secondary school students before they choose a career path, shifting the perception of fish as food only to fish also as science, career, innovation, and entrepreneurial opportunity.
• Strategic Orientation: We provide undergraduates with the mentorship and direction they need to transform their academic placement into a motivated career choice.
• Professional Excellence: We offer specialized training and capacity building for undergraduates, graduates, and young professionals, equipping them with the technical and leadership skills required to drive Africa’s blue economy forward. 
• Our goal is to transform Africa’s blue economy landscape from a sector of "diverted careers" into a hub of youth-led innovation. We envision:
  • Retention: Reducing the "brain drain" of talent by helping students and graduates discover high-value opportunities and long-term purpose within the industry.
  • Leadership: Raising a new generation of skilled leaders equipped to solve food security challenges through sustainable practices and modern technology.
  • Economic Growth: We develop "aquapreneurs" to unlock Africa’s aquatic wealth, driving local production and job creation to transform the blue economy into a powerhouse of continental prosperity.

FishLead Hub is a non-profit initiative dedicated to transforming Africa’s blue economy by turning students and youth into purposeful leaders. Our approach involves bridging the gap through secondary school awareness to inspire early interest and undergraduate mentorship to provide career clarity and professional networks. By offering structured training and leadership seminars, we equip young talent with the tools to innovate rather than exit the sector.
