Our journey: empowering Africa's blue economy leaders

Discover the passion and purpose behind FishLead Hub. Learn how we are transforming challenges into opportunities for young leaders in fisheries and aquaculture across Africa.

Why FishLead Hub was founded

FishLead Hub is a non-profit, youth-centred initiative established to raise and empower young leaders in Africa's blue economy. We noticed a significant issue: many students studying fisheries, aquaculture, and blue economy-related disciplines in African tertiary institutions lacked prior interest in their chosen fields. They often ended up there after failing to gain admission to other courses, leading to struggles with motivation, direction, and purpose.

A high percentage of graduates then diverted to other career paths, leaving a huge human capital gap in these vital sectors. These challenges stemmed from a lack of awareness, early mentorship, and exposure to real-life experiences. FishLead Hub seeks to change this narrative by building a supportive community that provides awareness, orientation, mentorship, training, and capacity development.

How we empower young people

We bridge the gap between "accidental admission" and "purposeful career" through three core pillars:

Awareness & Orientation: We reach secondary school students early to showcase the blue economy as a first-choice career, not a backup plan.

Structured Mentorship: We pair undergraduates with industry leaders to provide the "real-world" roadmap that classrooms often miss.

Capacity Building: Through specialised training and leadership seminars, we equip young professionals with the technical and soft skills needed to innovate in Africa's aquatic sectors.

Our goal is to transform Africa’s fisheries landscape from a sector of "diverted careers" into a hub of youth-led innovation. We envision:

  • Retention: Reducing the percentage of graduates who leave the field by helping them find motivation and high-value opportunities.
  • Leadership: Raising a new generation of leaders equipped to solve food security challenges.
  • Economic Growth: Building robust human capital.

Our vision for Africa's blue economy

FishLead Hub is a non-profit initiative dedicated to transforming Africa’s blue economy by turning "accidental students" into purposeful leaders. Our approach involves bridging the gap through secondary school awareness to inspire early interest and undergraduate mentorship to provide career clarity and professional networks. By offering structured training and leadership seminars, we equip young talent with the tools to innovate rather than exit the sector.

A successful FishLead Hub means a future where the blue economy is a first-choice career path. We envision a continent-wide network of youth-led startups and policy leaders driving food security and economic growth, ensuring that Africa’s aquatic resources are managed by a skilled, passionate, and permanent generation of experts.

Invest in Africa's future, invest in FishLead Hub
